Effect of long term use of hair dyes on the DNA damage in healthy female subjects

Abstract

To Date, the toxic effects of hair dyes on DNA have been investigated by several in vivo and in vitro tests and various conflicting results have been reported. To clarify this toxicity, we used "co met assay" which is a new and more sensitive method and it was used first time for the determination the effect of long term use of hair dyes on the DNA damage. Thirty-nine healthy female subjects were selected who have been using hair dyes for 4 to 12 years, and 24 healthy females who had never used hair dyes before were studied as a control group . The rate of damaged (limited and extensive migrated ) cells in the study group were significantly higher than that of the co ntrol group (I' < 0.05 ) indicatin g a detectable DNA damaging effect of hair dying on human lymph ocytes. In conclusion, we suggest that the caution should be recom mended in subjects whose family history of ca ncer is positive. Although our conclusion, however, can not be extended to the developing fetus in utero, women had better not use hair dye especially before and during pregnancy.

Bugüne kadar, saç boyalarının DNA üzerindeki toksik etkileri çeşitli in vivo ve in vitro testlerle araştırılmış ve çeşitli çelişkili sonuçlar bildirilmiştir. Bu toksisiteyi açıklığa kavuşturmak için, yeni ve daha hassas bir yöntem olan "ortak buluş analizi" ni kullandık ve uzun süreli saç boyası kullanımının DNA hasarı üzerindeki etkisinin belirlenmesinde ilk kez kullanıldı. 4-12 yıldır saç boyası kullanan 31 sağlıklı kadın denek seçildi ve daha önce hiç saç boyası kullanmayan 24 sağlıklı kadın kontrol grubu olarak incelendi. Çalışma grubundaki hasarlı (sınırlı ve yoğun göç eden) hücrelerin oranı, insan lenfositleri üzerinde saçın ölmesinin DNA'ya zarar veren etkisinin, kontrol grubuna (I <<0.05) göre anlamlı derecede yüksektir. Sonuç olarak, Ailede kanser öyküsü pozitif olan olgularda dikkatli olunması önerilmektedir. Bununla birlikte, sonuçlarımız, uteroda gelişen fetusa genişletilemese de, kadınlar özellikle hamilelikten önce ve gebelik sırasında saç boyasını kullanmasalardı.
