Demokrasi ve eğitim: kavramsal bir inceleme

Abstract

Demokrasi sahip olduğu üstünlükleri ile günümüzde en uygun yönetim biçimi olarak değerlendirilmektedir ancak demokrasi bir yönetim biçimi olmanın yanında aynı zamanda bir yaşam biçimidir. Demokratik yönetimlerin etkili ve başarılı olabilmesi demokrasiyi içselleştirmiş vatandaşlar ile mümkündür. Demokratik anlayış doğumla kazanılan bir özellik olmadığı için bu anlayışın kazanılmasında eğitim hayati role sahiptir. Bu doğrultuda bu çalışmada eğitim ve demokrasi arasındaki ilişki incelenmiştir. Bu kavramsal çalışma çerçevesinde ilk olarak demokrasi kavramı ve demokrasinin kısa tarihçesi ele alınmıştır. Daha sonra demokrasinin eğitimdeki yeri incelenmiş ve bu kapsamda demokrasinin okullarda nasıl öğretilebileceğine ilişkin yaklaşımlara ve demokratik eğitimin ilkelerine yer verilmiştir. Ek olarak, demokrasi eğitimi ile demokratik eğitim arasındaki farklılık netleştirilmiştir. Ayrıca demokrasi eğitiminin felsefi arka planı tartışılmış ve eğitim programlarında demokrasi başlığı kapsamında demokrasi eğitiminde kullanılabilecek yaklaşım ve yöntemlerden ve buna paralel olarak eleştirel düşünme gibi düşünme becerilerinin öneminden bahsedilmiştir. Demokratik bir toplumun oluşmasının demokrasiyi önceleyen ve kendisi de demokratik olan bir eğitim sistemi ile mümkün olduğu gerçeğinden hareketle bu çalışmada sunulan kavramsal çerçevenin demokrasi ve eğitim ilişkisinin önemine dikkat çekmesi hedeflenmiştir.

Democracy is considered as the most appropriate form of government today with its superiorities, but democracy is not only a form of government but also a way of life. Democratic governments can be effective and successful with citizens who have internalized democracy. Since democratic understanding is not a feature acquired by birth, education has a vital role in gaining this understanding. In this study, the relationship between education and democracy is examined. In the framework of this conceptual study, firstly, the concept of democracy and its short history are discussed. Afterwards, the place of democracy in education is examined and, approaches about how democracy can be taught in schools and principles of democratic education are analyzed and the difference between democracy education and democratic education is clarified. In addition, the philosophical background of democracy education is discussed and the approaches and methods that can be used in democracy education and the importance of thinking skills such as critical thinking in parallel with this are addressed within the scope of democracy in curricula title. Based on the fact that the formation of a democratic society is possible with an education system that prioritizes democracy and that is itself democratic, it is aimed that the conceptual framework presented in this study draws attention to the importance of the relationship between democracy and education.
