| dc.description.abstract | In this study, biodiesel production from crude sunflower oil using a microwave-assisted transesterification method was optimized, and the engine performance, combustion characteristics, and exhaust emissions of a 20% biodiesel blend (B20) were investigated under different engine speeds, engine loads, and carbon quantum dot (CQD) nanoparticle concentrations in a single-cylinder, direct-injection diesel engine. The study consisted of two main optimization stages. In the first stage, biodiesel production parameters were optimized, while in the second stage, engine operating conditions were statistically modeled and optimized using the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) based on a Central Composite Design. In the biodiesel production stage, reaction time, catalyst amount, reaction temperature, and methanol content were considered independent variables, while biodiesel yield was selected as the response variable. The reduced cubic model was identified as the best-fitting model for the experimental data. Analysis of variance results demonstrated that the model was highly statistically significant. The coefficient of determination was calculated as R² = 0.9912, and the non-significant lack-of-fit test (p = 0.3582) confirmed that the model accurately represented the experimental data. Reaction temperature was found to be the most influential parameter affecting biodiesel yield, while the interaction between temperature and reaction time was identified as the most dominant interaction term. According to the optimization results, the maximum biodiesel yield of 87.072% was achieved at a reaction time of 14.808 min, NaOH catalyst concentration of 1.185%, reaction temperature of 66.433 °C, and methanol content of 29.854%. In the validation experiment conducted under optimum conditions, the biodiesel yield was measured as 86.2%, with an error of only 1.001% between the predicted and experimental values. The biodiesel produced under optimum conditions was blended with diesel fuel at a volumetric ratio of 20% (B20). In addition, fuels containing three different concentrations of CQD nanoparticles (80, 160, and 240 ppm), namely B20KKN80, B20KKN160, and B20KKN240, were prepared and compared with neat diesel fuel. Engine tests were carried out at a constant engine speed of 1800 rpm and three different engine loads (10.98, 16.48, and 21.97 Nm). The evaluated parameters included in-cylinder pressure, net heat release rate, indicated thermal efficiency (ITE), specific fuel consumption (SFC), indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP), combustion duration, CA50, carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbon (HC), and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. The results revealed that the highest cylinder pressure, indicated thermal efficiency, and IMEP values were obtained with the B20KKN160 fuel. The 160 ppm CQD concentration was identified as the optimum level for engine performance, whereas performance deterioration was observed at 240 ppm due to nanoparticle agglomeration. In terms of emissions, both B20 and CQD-blended fuels reduced CO and HC emissions compared with diesel fuel, with the lowest emission values achieved at the 160 ppm concentration. However, NOx emissions increased relative to diesel fuel because of the biodiesel content, confirming the well-known NOx–CO trade-off behavior. During the engine performance and emission optimization stage, engine load, engine speed, and CQD nanoparticle concentration were considered independent variables, while SFC, ITE, CO, NOx, and HC were selected as response variables and analyzed using quadratic RSM models. ANOVA results indicated that all models were statistically significant (p < 0.0001), and the lack-of-fit tests were non-significant. Among the developed models, the NOx model exhibited the highest coefficient of determination (R² = 0.994), whereas the HC model showed the lowest (R² = 0.917). Engine load was found to be the most dominant factor affecting both performance and emission characteristics, while the CQD additive had a statistically significant but comparatively limited effect. Multi-response optimization using the desirability function approach determined the optimum engine operating conditions as an engine load of 14.63 Nm, engine speed of 2037.85 rpm, and CQD nanoparticle concentration of 136.44 ppm. Under these conditions, a specific fuel consumption of 244.08 g/kWh, indicated thermal efficiency of 33.15%, CO emission of 0.097%, NOx emission of 1025.24 ppm, and HC emission of 54.13 ppm were obtained, with an overall desirability value of 0.81. The findings demonstrate that high-yield biodiesel can be successfully produced from crude sunflower oil using a microwave-assisted transesterification process. Furthermore, the B20 fuel blend enhanced with CQD nanoparticles represents a promising alternative fuel formulation for renewable energy applications, offering improved engine performance and reduced emissions while maintaining practical feasibility. | |
