| dc.description.abstract | Rising populations in urban and rural areas, escalating consumption demands, reliance on fossil fuels, industrialization, and urbanization processes inflict multifaceted degradation upon natural ecosystems. In monitoring and managing these deteriorations, technological advancements have rendered deep learning methodologies considerably more effective than classical approaches. The fundamental objective of this study is to comparatively evaluate the tree detection performance of deep learning models based on YOLO and RT-DETR algorithms under identical dataset and hyperparameter conditions. Within this framework, the RT-DETR L, YOLOv3 m, YOLOv5 m, YOLOv6 m, YOLOv8 m, YOLOv9 m, YOLOv10 m, YOLOv11 m, YOLOv12 m, and YOLOv26 m models were trained and tested using 10 cm resolution SWISSIMAGE orthophoto data from the cantons of Vaud (2023) and Bern (2024) in Switzerland. All procedures were implemented utilizing the Ultralytics library; model performance was evaluated based on training metrics (mAP50, Precision, Recall, F1 Score) and detection accuracy rates across two independent study areas. By elucidating fundamental challenges and methodologies in object detection, this work aims to provide guidance for more comprehensive scientific investigations in the future. | |
