Tevfikîzâde İsmail Tevfik’in Medeniyet-i İslâmiye ve İngiliz Müslümanları adlı eserinin transkripsiyon ve değerlendirmesi

Abstract

Tanzimat ile başlayan Batılılaşma sürecinde Osmanlı aydınları tarafından devletin bekasının sağlanması, toplumsal bütünlüğün korunması ve modernleşen dünyada varlık gösterebilmesi amacıyla “medeniyet” kavramı merkezî bir tartışma alanı haline getirilmiştir. Bu çalışmada, Tevfikîzâde İsmail Tevfik’in Medeniyet-i İslâmiye ve İngiliz Müslümanları adlı risalesinin Latin harflerine transkripsiyonunun yapılması, II. Meşrutiyet dönemi Avrupa-İslam medeniyeti tartışmaları bağlamında değerlendirilmesi ve literatüre kazandırılması amaçlanmıştır. Bu kapsamda medeniyet kavramının Avrupa’daki tarihsel ve etimolojik gelişimi ile Osmanlı düşünce dünyasına girişi incelenmiş; söz konusu risale transkribe edilerek içerik bakımından değerlendirilmiştir. Yapılan inceleme sonucunda risalenin, Batı dünyasında İslam dinine yöneltilen eleştirilere cevap vermeyi amaçladığı, Osmanlı düşünce geleneğinde İslam medeniyeti anlayışını yansıttığı ve II. Meşrutiyet dönemi medeniyet tartışmalarının önemli örneklerinden birini teşkil ettiği tespit edilmiştir.

During the Westernization process that began with the Tanzimat, the concept of civilization was placed at the center of intellectual debates by Ottoman intellectuals in order to ensure the survival of the state, preserve social cohesion, and maintain a presence in the modernizing world. This study aims to transcribe into the Latin alphabet Tevfikîzâde İsmail Tevfik’s treatise entitled Medeniyet-i İslâmiye ve İngiliz Müslümanları, to evaluate it within the context of the debates on European and Islamic civilization during the Second Constitutional Period, and to contribute to the existing literature. Within this scope, the historical and etymological development of the concept of civilization in Europe and its introduction into the Ottoman intellectual world were examined; the aforementioned treatise was transcribed and evaluated in terms of its content. As a result of the study, it was determined that the treatise aimed to respond to Western criticisms directed against Islam, reflected the understanding of Islamic civilization within the Ottoman intellectual tradition, and constituted one of the significant examples of the civilization debates during the Second Constitutional Period.
